The Mechelse Baladi - CCP26 shows surprisingly little diversity; most chickens are silver laced, which seems to be a dominant trait of the Baladi chicken.

Haughænsni

Haughænsni

Iceland

A rare breed that was almost extinct in the nineties. Now there are more than 3.500 birds. The Haughænsni has been present in Iceland since the introduction by Norse settlers in the 9th century. Genetic studies show that the inbreeding coefficient is high, as is expected in a small population of isolated animals, and shared in rare breeds. Nevertheless, the Haughænsni has retained a reasonable level of genetic diversity. Genetic studies indicate a relationship with Northwest European breeds.

They are small, dark, or greyish. All color varieties are represented, except white, cuckoo, and pearl grey. The comb shape can be single or rose comb shape, but other forms are also available. The leg color varies from flesh-colored to yellow and gray-blue.

Expeditie

Crossbreeding with this bird was possible because Vanmechelen already had Icelandic chickens at his farm. COVID-19 left him with few options to crossbreed with other chicken species. Traveling was forbidden for men as well as other animals. His farm has some ‘emergency species’ for crossbreeding under challenging times.
