Mysticism — Rituals, Stillness, Rapture

Limburgs Museum, Venlo (NL)
15 October 2022 - 19 March 2023

From 15 October 2022 to 19 March 2023, the Limburgs Museum in Venlo will feature Koen Vanmechelen in the group exhibition 'Mysticism: Rituals. Stillness. Rapture'. The exhibition offers new perspectives on the subject of mysticism. Visitors will experience, feel, and witness the richness and diversity of the concept of mysticism, through the eyes of contemporary artists and collection pieces from the Limburgs Museum.

Mysticism

Mysticism is about man's continuous attempts to transcend reality from time to time and elevate our souls. Whether through prayer or meditation, with the help of rosaries, music, fragrances or yoga poses, through walks in nature or through intoxicating dance, drink or drugs; people give shape in all kinds of ways to the deep-rooted hope for 'more' than just everyday reality.

The exhibition comprises three parts. From a room where rituals are central, the visitor is led to a room where silence is experienced. After that stillness comes the storm: ecstasy.

The exhibition Mystique builds a bridge between the old religious art of the Limburgs Museum and the work of leading contemporary artists such as Wim Delvoye, Melanie Bonajo, Les Deux Garçons and Koen Vanmechelen, who all express the theme in their own way. From confrontational and thought-provoking installations to photos and old film footage of carnivals and processions that make you smile.
